A team of engineering students from Virginia Tech has successfully completed a clean water project that is transforming lives in the Masara Steel Community in western Kenya. Working through the university’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chapter, the students partnered with local residents to design and construct a sustainable water supply system that is improving access to safe drinking water while strengthening community resilience.
The initiative is the result of a long-term partnership that began in 2019, with Virginia Tech students working alongside community members to identify local water challenges and develop practical, sustainable engineering solutions. Rather than implementing a short-term intervention, the project focused on creating infrastructure that the community can operate and maintain independently for years to come.
The completed system provides residents with a reliable source of clean water, reducing dependence on unsafe or distant water sources that previously required lengthy daily journeys. Improved access to safe water is expected to enhance public health, reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases and free up time for education, farming and other income-generating activities.
For the students, the project offered valuable hands-on experience in humanitarian engineering, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges while learning the importance of community engagement and culturally appropriate design. Team members worked closely with local leaders throughout the planning, construction and implementation phases to ensure the system reflected community priorities and local conditions.
Virginia Tech officials noted that the project demonstrates how engineering education can contribute to sustainable development by combining technical expertise with meaningful partnerships. The experience also exposed students to the broader social, environmental and economic dimensions of water security, reinforcing the role engineers can play in addressing global development challenges.
The Masara Steel project reflects the growing contribution of university-led humanitarian engineering initiatives to expanding water access in underserved communities across Africa. By prioritising local participation, capacity building and long-term sustainability, such partnerships are helping bridge water access gaps while equipping the next generation of engineers with the skills needed to tackle complex global challenges.
